PRSA-NY Announces Individual Chapter Award Winners at 2021 Big Apple Awards

Winners of the John W. Hill Award, PRSA-NY Excellence in Mentoring Award and PRSA-NY President’s Award were announced at The Edison Ballroom

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#2021BigAppleAwards–The New York Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA-NY) last night announced the winners of the John W. Hill Award, the PRSA-NY Excellence In Mentoring Award and the PRSA-NY President’s Award during the 2021 Big Apple Awards gala at the Edison Ballroom.


Helio Fred Garcia, Executive Director, Logos Institute for Crisis Management & Executive Leadership, was the recipient of PRSA-NY’s top honor, the John W. Hill Award. This award recognizes professional achievement in the practice of public relations and is named for the founder of one of the world’s preeminent PR firms. Recipients are industry leaders who exemplify Mr. Hill’s beliefs that experience, quality, integrity and judgement are the cornerstones upon which the profession has been built. Helio was recognized for his work over 40 years in helping leaders build trust, inspire loyalty, and lead effectively.

Sandra Fathi, Chief Strategy Officer, Gregory, FCA, was the recipient of the PRSA-NY Excellence in Mentoring Award for her work over the past 20 years helping technology companies achieve their communications goals. The PRSA-NY Excellence In Mentoring Award (previously the Dorf Award) honors individuals who lead, guide and selflessly counsel and stimulate the careers of PR professionals. A celebrated speaker and active contributor to PR industry publications, Sandra turns emerging communications tools into practical, useful strategies for clients with tangible ROI.

Kate Ryan, Managing Director, U.S., Diffusion PR, was the recipient of the PRSA-NY President’s Award. Selected by the President of PRSA-NY, the award honors a current or former member of the chapter who exemplifies the highest standards of ethical conduct and outstanding service within the public relations profession and to PRSA and its New York chapter. A former PRSA-NY Board Director, Kate was recognized for her commitment to public relations through her leadership of Diffusion’s U.S. operations in both New York and Los Angeles. With more than 15 years of experience, Kate has managed and executed award-winning PR and social media campaigns for a wide variety of B2B and B2C brands.

RECIPIENT – JOHN W. HILL AWARD

Helio Fred Garcia

Executive Director, Logos Institute for Crisis Management & Executive Leadership + Columbia University.

For 40 years Helio Fred Garcia has helped leaders build trust, inspire loyalty, and lead effectively. He is a coach, counselor, teacher, writer, and speaker whose clients include some of the largest and best-known companies and organizations in the world. Fred is the President of the crisis management firm Logos Consulting Group and executive director of the Logos Institute for Crisis Management and Executive Leadership.

The author of five books on leadership, crisis, and communication, he has worked in dozens of countries on six continents and has been on the New York University faculty since 1988. He is an adjunct professor of management in NYU’s Stern School of Business, where he was named 2016 Executive MBA Great Professor. Fred is also an adjunct associate professor of professional development and leadership at Columbia University’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, where he teaches leadership communication, ethics, crisis.

Sandra has spent the past 20 years helping technology companies achieve their communications goals. A celebrated speaker and active contributor to PR industry publications, Sandra turns emerging communications tools into practical, useful strategies for clients with tangible ROI.

Prior to founding Affect Strategies in 2002, Sandra led corporate communications and investor relations for RADVISION, a provider of video conferencing infrastructure products. Earlier in her career, she was on the technology team at Edelman Public Relations Worldwide, where she specialized in the networking, telecommunications, computer hardware, software and Internet business verticals. While at Edelman, some of Sandra’s clients included Ericsson, EDS and Microsoft. A New York native, Sandra attended New York University and graduated from Hebrew University of Jerusalem with a degree in International Relations.

Kate Ryan

Managing Director, US, Diffusion PR

Kate oversees Diffusion’s U.S. operations in both New York and Los Angeles and provides strategic counsel across the agency. With more than 15 years of experience, Kate has managed and executed award-winning PR and social media campaigns for a wide variety of B2B and B2C brands. Her specialty lies in executing the creative campaigns that truly move the needle for her clients, leading her teams to win more than 50 industry awards for excellence in PR. Kate has driven programs that have helped clients be acquired by Red Hat, Synchrony Financial and Intel. Kate was named one of Bulldog Reporter’s “Stars of PR” and one of PRSA New York’s 15 Under 35. In 2020, she was named one of the Top Women in PR by PR News. She has also served on the Board of Directors for PRSA-NY.
