CALABASAS, Calif. & DOWNERS GROVE, Ill.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–PlanetArt, LLC, a leader and one of the fastest growing companies in the print-on-demand and personalization spaces, and FTD Companies, Inc. (“FTD”) announced that PlanetArt has completed the acquisition of Personal Creations from FTD Companies for $18.1 million in cash, plus certain additional payments, as part of FTD’s court-supervised restructuring.
Woodridge, Illinois-based Personal Creations (PersonalCreations.com) brings a new gifts dimension to PlanetArt’s high-growth personalized products platform. PlanetArt is well known for its FreePrints family of mobile apps, Simply to Impress website and other properties offering photo prints, photo books, cards and wall décor. The Personal Creations acquisition enhances PlanetArt’s business and growth trajectory with the addition of a well-established personalized gifts component.
“Personal Creations is the ideal complement to the existing PlanetArt ecosystem,” said Roger Bloxberg, PlanetArt’s CEO and co-founder. “It is the ecommerce leader in personalized gift products with a long and impressive history of innovation, and we are pleased to be expanding our business into this important category and delighted to welcome a world-class team.”
“Personal Creations is a natural strategic fit,” continued Bloxberg. “Among other things, it enhances the customer value proposition. For example, there are tremendous synergies between our card apps and websites on the one hand and, on the other, the ability to include premium-quality custom-created gifts as unique as the people receiving them.”
Personal Creations’ product catalog is extensive, ranging from kitchenware to hostess gifts, school supplies to clothing and accessories. And with gifts for virtually anyone, the acquisition presents numerous new product opportunities for the broader PlanetArt business.
“We believe that the sale of Personal Creations to PlanetArt maximizes value and is the best path forward for the business, its customers and its employees,” added Scott Levin, CEO of FTD. “We know the PlanetArt team well and are confident that Personal Creations will flourish under its new owners, who will build on the company’s strong foundation and carry its vision well into the future.”
The transaction enriches PlanetArt with a full complement of talented gifting specialist staff in merchandising, development, design, operations and marketing and with multiple well-known brands—PersonalCreations.com, RedEnvelope.com and Gifts.com.
Oppenheimer & Co. Inc. served as PlanetArt’s exclusive financial advisor for the transaction, and Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner, Culhane Meadows, and Fox Rothschild as its legal counsel.
PlanetArt is a leading technology platform in the personalized products industry. Founded in 2010 with the acquisition of Simply to Impress, PlanetArt has grown from $400,000 to roughly $200 million in revenue in just nine years. The company develops and operates five ecommerce sites and six mobile apps for iOS and Android, including FreePrints, all with the vision of allowing consumers to forge closer, more meaningful relationships with family and friends. PlanetArt is unique in its space with a large emphasis on mobile transactions and a presence in ten countries, including the US, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Ireland and the Netherlands.
