Cycle City Series Finished by Big 3 Media Using DaVinci Resolve Studio and Blackmagic Cloud

Fremont, CA, USA – Wednesday, November 22, 2023 – Blackmagic Design today announced that post production for “Cycle City,” a video series by Singapore’s The Straits Times, was completed using DaVinci Resolve Studio editing, color grading, visual effects (VFX) and audio post production software by Big 3 Media. Besides grading, editing, audio design and mixing using DaVinci Resolve Studio, Big 3 Media also used Blackmagic Cloud for cloud based collaboration between various artists in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

Big 3 Media is a Singapore based video production and post production company. Founded in 2008, Big 3 Media is a group of media companies spanning across multiple media disciplines, with additional offices in Malaysia, China and India. The company provides video production, live streaming, motion graphics and animation services for top global brands and organizations such as Lancôme, Bosch, Citibank and L’Oréal.

The Straits Times, the most read print and digital newspaper in Singapore, worked with Big 3 Media around “Cycle City,” a six part video series that took a look at the world of cycling in Singapore. This included shining a light on road cycling, mountain biking, indoor cycling and delivery riding for audiences of varying levels of experience in cycling.

The videos included footage showing every part of the biking experience both at night and during the day. This included footage taken from cameras mounted on the bikes and riders themselves, natural audio and city sounds, interviews with bikers, action shots from mountain biking, city biking and high quality graphics. Big 3 Media was tasked with bringing together footage from different cameras and handling the entire post production process for the project.

William Orchard, head of post production at Big 3 Media, was tasked with managing the project. Big 3 Media is a longtime user of DaVinci Resolve Studio, and was one of the first creative companies in Asia to adopt the usage of Blackmagic Cloud.

For the “Cycle City” project, deadlines were comparatively tight, and the ability to collaborate with colorists and editors across Asia with Blackmagic Cloud was essential.

Orchard explained: “Big 3 Media has been on Blackmagic Cloud the moment it was launched and has been a huge fan. It has vastly improved our workflow and has also allowed us to collaborate more efficiently. We have colleagues based in Kuala Lumpur and in Singapore, which would traditionally make collaboration challenging due to the geographical differences. However, for this project, the ability to collaborate over Blackmagic Cloud in real time made the process so much simpler.”

DaVinci Resolve Studio’s ability to work wth grading, editing and audio in the same software was also a huge help for both efficiency and creativity.

“The notable thing about ‘Cycle City’ was that due to the episodic nature of this series, the timeline from completion of production to delivery was shorter than anticipated. There were some episodes that had less than 10 days to complete post production in order to meet the deadlines for the launch of the subsequent episode. Being able to grade and do audio at the same time in Resolve saved so much time, and was really helpful in terms of creativity,” Orchard said.

He concluded: “Being a show about cycling and with a goal of capturing the entire experience, the sound was as important as the image. The audio artists and colorists could work much more closely with Resolve, which then allowed them the room to be more creative and not feel like they were siloed. So the entire process from editing, grading, sound design and mixing were done completely in Resolve.”
