Udemy Releases Workplace Learning Data on Global Top In-Demand Skills in September

Skills for Hybrid Work Surge Over 500% Across Employee Learners Globally

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#HRUdemy, a leading destination for learning and teaching online, today released the “September 2021 Workplace Learning Skills Index,” which identifies the most in-demand skills consumed by organizations globally in September. With access to workplace learning activity generated by learners on Udemy’s corporate product, Udemy Business, Udemy research can help leaders and employees alike identify skills as they gain momentum, and upskill with timely courses needed to stay ahead of the curve.

“As we move into a new work environment, which for many, will be a hybrid approach to the office, employees and leaders alike will need a fresh set of skills in order to thrive,” said Cara Brennan Allamano, SVP of People, Places, and Learning at Udemy. “We believe that building the organizational muscle for continuous learning, understanding the skills your employees need, and setting aside time for your teams to learn will help them adapt and succeed in the hybrid workplace.”

September’s learning index analyzes the skills employees are learning on the Udemy Business platform, with data driven by thousands of Udemy Business customers globally. The index identified top surging technical skills, like Microsoft SC-900 (784% increase in consumption) and Oracle ERP (345%), as well as in-demand soft skills like Hybrid Teams (527%), Conversation Skills (132%), and Coaching (113%).

Additionally, Udemy identified surging skills geographically to help global businesses understand the emerging and critical skills within individual markets. For example, Functional Programming course consumption surged 148% in Germany and 84% in South Korea, while Personal Productivity course consumption jumped by 469% in Japan and 166% in Brazil.

“Leaders should avoid a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach with hybrid work models,” said Udemy Virtual Teams instructor, Hassan Osman, in response to the surge of Hybrid Teams course consumption. “What works for Team A might be different than what works for Team B, and that’s okay. Organizations are not going to have one solution that covers everyone equally and the top priority of a hybrid leader should be to make sure all employees are treated fairly.”

In addition to the in-demand skills analysis, employee learning activity indicated:

  • Top skills surging in the United States were Databricks 416%, Industry 4.0 369%, and Web App Development 325%
  • 174% increase in Tensorflow course consumption in the Government sector
  • 129% increase in Change Management course consumption in the Technology industry
  • 104% increase in Interpersonal Feedback course consumption in the Financial Services industry
  • 302% increase in Databricks course consumption globally
  • 145% increase in Asana course consumption globally
  • 70% increase in Team Building course consumption globally

Methodology

The 2021 September Workplace Learning Skills Index is based on data from the learning behavior of thousands of companies across the globe using the Udemy Business platform. Skills data compares the consumption of courses in the Udemy Business collection from August 2021 to September 2021. All courses are associated with topics, with each course having up to five topics. These topics are what you see as the trending skills within the report. For courses with multiple topics, consumption minutes are divided equally across all topics associated with those courses.
