Strategy Analytics: Q2 2019 Smartphone and Tablet GPU Market Share: Apple Gains Share as Arm Falters

Arm Maintains Lead

BOSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The global smartphone and tablet GPU shipments declined 9 percent year-over-year in Q2 2019, according to Strategy Analytics Handset Component Technologies service report, “Smartphone and Tablet GPU Market Share Q2 2019: Apple Gains GPU Share.”

This Strategy Analytics research report estimates that Arm, Qualcomm, Apple, Imagination Technologies and Intel captured the top-five unit share spots in the global smartphone and tablet GPU market in Q2 2019. Arm led the smartphone and tablet GPU market with 43 percent unit share in Q2 2019 followed by Qualcomm with 36 percent and Apple with 12 percent.

Sravan Kundojjala, Associate Director, commented, “The mobile GPU market leader Arm has been experiencing weakness in its Mali-branded GPU shipments as its key licensees MediaTek and Unisoc have significantly underperformed in the smartphone market in the last two years. In addition, Imagination Technologies, despite losing Apple’s GPU business, made inroads at MediaTek and Unisoc with key design-wins. Strategy Analytics estimates that Arm GPU IP-based smartphone and tablet GPU shipments declined 16 percent year-on-year in Q2 2019. Strategy Analytics notes that Arm’s other significant GPU licensee Samsung has partnered with AMD and the partnership could further affect Arm’s GPU position in the smartphone and tablet GPU market in future.”

Stuart Robinson, Executive Director of the Strategy Analytics Handset Component Technologies service, added, “Apple, a new entrant in mobile GPUs, replaced Imagination’s GPUs with its own and gained significant market share. Strategy Analytics estimates that Apple’s in-house GPU IP-based smartphone and tablet GPU shipments grew 27 percent year-over-year in Q2 2019. Some of the key Apple chips with its own GPU include the A11 Bionic, A12 Bionic, A12X Bionic and A13 Bionic.”
