PRSA-NY Announces Makovsky Excellence in Mentoring Award and John W. Hill Award

Entries now open for the Big Apple Individual Awards with a deadline of September 10

Award winners will be honored at the 34th annual, in-person event in New York City on September 28, 2021

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#2021BigAppleAwards–The New York Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA-NY) today announced the Makovsky Excellence in Mentoring Award and the John W. Hill Award are open for nomination by members of PRSA-NY with entries closing Friday, September 10.

The Makovsky Excellence in Mentoring Award (previously the Dorf Award) honors individuals who lead, guide and selflessly counsel and stimulate the careers of PR professionals. To be considered for this award, the candidate must meet the following criteria:

  • Leadership in guiding and inspiring the careers of entry level and other young PR professionals.
  • Demonstration of the highest standards of the profession in a selfless role as a mentor.
  • Service to young professionals beyond the scope of the nominee’s professional duties.

In 2020, Dr. Rochelle Ford was honored with the Makovsky Excellence in Mentoring Award as part of a PRSA-NY virtual awards program and panel event. In her award acceptance, Ford explained that she has been drawn to mentorship because of the guidance and support she received during her own personal and professional development. Ford championed the need for public relations professionals to nurture and counsel future generations, building relationships that last beyond the beginning of a person’s career. This year, PRSA-NY looks forward to this spirit of mentorship continuing at the 2021 Big Apple Awards.

PRSA-NY’s top honor, The John W. Hill Award, recognizes professional achievement in the practice of public relations. Named for the founder of one of the world’s preeminent PR firms, the award has been presented annually since 1977. Recipients are industry leaders who exemplify Mr. Hill’s beliefs that experience, quality, integrity and judgment are the cornerstones upon which the profession has been built. To be considered for this award, nominees must meet the following criteria:

  • Leadership in the development of the practice of public relations.
  • Demonstration of the highest standards of integrity.
  • Fostering and promoting understanding among people.
  • Service to the public beyond the scope of the nominee’s regular duties.
  • Promoting communications and understanding through education and the exchange of ideas.

“The Makovsky Excellence in Mentoring Award for mentorship and the John W. Hill Award for professional achievement allow us to celebrate the outstanding achievements of individuals in public relations and communications in New York,” said Andrew Graham, President of PRSA-NY. “I’m pleased the Big Apple Awards will be returning to an in-person event this year and look forward to recognizing the winners alongside our industry colleagues.”
