Leveraging innovative technologies, including virtual reality, offers new solutions for addressing chronic pain and eliminates risks associated with opioid use
LAS VEGAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Harvard MedTech, a breakthrough digital health company, will participate in a panel presentation highlighting new approaches to pain management, including virtual reality technology and spinal cord stimulation, at the Worker’s Compensation Institute conference in Orlando, Florida, on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2021, at 1:00 PM.
The session, titled “Spinal Cord Stimulation And Virtual Reality Treat Pain Without Opioids,” will feature Harvard MedTech Advisory Board Member, Mark Pew, along with Miguel D. Attias, M.D., from Tampa Pain Relief Centers, and Navdeep Jassal, M.D., from the Spine & Pain Institute of Florida, and will be moderated by Miguel de la Garza, M.D., DABA, DAPM, from Comprehensive Pain Management Partners. Panelists will discuss two novel therapies that offer solutions for injured workers suffering with chronic pain that remove the risks associated with opioids: spinal cord stimulation and virtual reality.
Pew will explain how virtual reality combined with behavioral therapy has the ability to build new neural pathways, essentially retraining the brain’s response to pain. He will also outline best practices and present case studies that demonstrate the program can be a successful alternative to opioids for managing pain.
“Leveraging new technologies to manage chronic pain eliminates the risks associated with complex surgeries and ongoing medication usage,” said Pew. “I look forward to sharing how Harvard MedTech’s Vx Therapy takes a holistic approach to pain management, combining the biopsychosocial model with virtual reality therapy. This novel treatment is resulting in positive clinical outcomes that come from focusing on the injured worker as a human being, not just as a claimant.”
Harvard MedTech’s Vx Therapy is based on new science about how the brain works. The VR therapy is used in the home, and is coupled with personalized behavioral health intervention strategies that teach more skills to permanently lower pain and discomfort that contribute to depression and sleep disorders. The patient uses virtual reality technology to have positive, engaging experiences that reduce the sensation of pain while the brain builds new neural pathways. With the application of digital health, Vx Therapy is a scalable solution for employers, carriers and risk managers to manage patient populations and contain costs.
The conference takes place Dec. 12-15 at Orlando World Center Marriott. For more information, contact Pat McCutcheon, PMcCutcheon@harvardmedtech.com, 516-946-7938.
