Grand Caribbean Marinas Advances Floating Wave Attenuator Project at Marina Puerto Chico, Expanding Puerto Rico’s Blue Economy Infrastructure

Project adds coastal-resilience infrastructure to the six-marina network, supporting transient boating, nautical tourism, fishing, and marine trades across Puerto Rico

FAJARDO, PUERTO RICO / ACCESS Newswire / September 19, 2026 / Grand Caribbean Marinas (GCM), owned and operated by Giuseppe Cicatelli’s Bacalia Group, today announced progress on the installation of a floating wave attenuator (FWA) at Marina Puerto Chico’s Docks A1 and A2. The coastal-resilience upgrade is designed to accommodate transient boating, protect vessels and infrastructure, and expand the marina’s operating capacity.

The project is being developed in coordination with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Puerto Rico’s Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA).

“A floating wave attenuator isn’t a cosmetic upgrade; it’s resilience infrastructure,” said Giuseppe Cicatelli, Founder and Principal of Bacalia Group. “Marinas function as working coastal infrastructure: they support nautical tourism, dockhands, mechanics, captains, divers, and hundreds of small businesses built around the water. Structures that protect coastal infrastructure against storm exposure represent the kind of overlooked, long-duration assets that deserve more institutional attention within the blue economy.”

Marina Puerto Chico is one of six properties in the Grand Caribbean Marinas network, alongside Isleta Marina, Sea Lovers Marina, Marina Sardinera, Renaissance Villa Marina, and Bluecoast. Together, these properties serve an estimated 3,000 boats and approximately 50 marina concessionaires across nautical tourism, charter, sport fishing, diving, retail, and repair operations, supporting an estimated 1,000 direct and indirect jobs. The network has invested in blue-economy infrastructure since Hurricane María, with a focus on resilience-driven rebuilding rather than simple replacement.
