CAMDEN, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE: AWK), the largest publicly
traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, announced today it was
named as one of the 100
Most Sustainable Companies by Barron’s Magazine.

This is the second year in a row that the American Water was named to
this list. This year, the company ranked highest for New Jersey-based
companies, coming in at No. 23 up from No. 36 last year.
American Water’s dedication to sustainability and being an environmental
leader in the water industry includes reducing its greenhouse gas
emissions (GHG) by 31% through 2017 and reducing it 40% by 2025. The
company has reduced annual water usage by 3.5 billion gallons through
conservation and will invest more than $8 billion to improve aging
infrastructure to reduce and eliminate water leaks.
American Water also recently announced Kevin Kirwan as its new Chief
Environmental Officer to further its commitment to being a leader in
environmental sustainability, caring for the planet, and leading the
nation in outstanding water safety and quality.
Last year, the company was also recognized by The Philadelphia Inquirer
as one
of the top-ranked companies in the Philadelphia region on diversity,
governance, & transparency. American Water also announced
a partnership with the Paradigm for Parity® coalition and its
commitment to further support inclusion and diversity efforts across its
corporate leadership structure by 2030 as well as show support for the
same actions in corporations across the U.S.
The company has also been included in the NAACP
Equity, Inclusion and Empowerment Index and recently was one of 230
companies selected for the 2019 Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index
