3M Partners with Visual Artist Patrick Shearn to Construct a Large-Scale Art Installation for 3M Open PGA TOUR Event
The Skynet installation named “Symphonic Vision” is a blend of art and science that will invite 3M Open guests to celebrate being a part of “Golf That Matters”
BLAINE, Minn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#GolfThatMatters–3M announced they have partnered with world-renowned visual artist Patrick Shearn and his studio Poetic Kinetics to design and build a large-scale art installation for its inaugural 3M Open PGA TOUR event. The installation named “Symphonic Vision” will captivate spectators at the entryway of TPC Twin Cities from July 1-7, creating a “wow” moment as fans enter the tournament.
Inspired by the Northern Lights, this art installation is intended to represent individual elements working in concert to achieve a greater impact and serves as a visual representation of the 3M Open’s signature event theme, “Golf That Matters.” Ultimately, “Symphonic Vision” signifies that when we come together to support a greater cause, our impact can reach far beyond ourselves.
“The 3M Open is golf that matters and is an opportunity for 3M and fans to witness amazing golf, and to harness the power of community to improve lives right here in Minnesota,” said Denise Rutherford, 3M’s senior vice president of Corporate Affairs. “What Patrick and his team have created is a remarkable visual experience that embodies the sentiment of collective good. ‘Symphonic Vision’ sets the tone for the entire tournament, and we’re thrilled to have partnered with such a creative powerhouse.”
Shearn is a Los Angeles-based artist specializing in larger-than-life, immersive public art installations. His signature kinetic sculptures, called Skynets, earned him international recognition after the debut of “Liquid Shard” enamored the city of Los Angeles.
“I’m always inspired to reveal the true nature of how things really are, and I often am drawn towards illustrating scientific principles and pursuing innovative and interdisciplinary combinations of technology,” said Shearn. “In this way, it’s a real treat to be in partnership with 3M to bring this artwork to life. I have been thrilled to talk with their scientists about their cutting-edge technology and create magic with it.”
“Symphonic Vision” was brought to life using 64,410 streamers of 3M™ Dichroic Film and 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material and will span a surface area of 10,800 square feet. The undulating artwork will have a dynamic range of motion that tops out at 70 feet and a minimum height of 17 feet.
“When I first encountered dichroic material, I was absolutely mesmerized and determined to figure it out. It creates incredible rainbows and the contrast between the reflected light and the pass-through light is a fascinating element to consider for my Skynet series.”
Shearn’s expertise in animatronics, robotics and visual effects – gleaned from a 30-year tenure in the film industry as a creature maker and visual effects supervisor – has lent traction to a prolific career as creative director for his studio Poetic Kinetics.
“In my career, I’ve had the opportunity to speak with astronauts, which has informed some of my past work. I’ve been similarly humbled to exchange ideas with 3M scientists and have found them equally passionate, gracious and helpful to my unconventional creative process.”
Shearn will be available for in-person media opportunities at the 3M Open Media Center on the grounds of TPC Twin Cities on Tuesday, July 2, from 3-4 p.m. or by special request.
